I’m not sure what possesses Smokers to also be Litterbugs, but they should be ashamed. I would be more tolerant of their nasty habits if they kept their smoke to themselves and put their butts in a trash can.
All of my grandparents were smokers. Nothing makes a kid want to spend less time with grandparents than a stinky smoke-filled house. They all died from smoking-related illnesses.
That’s all I have to say about that.

Norway is about to ban smoking in public outdoor places like bus stops and such. Not sure how they will enforce this ban but it sounds delightful.

I know the feeling. I haven’t woken up with a tight chest in about 6 1/2 years. Quitting sucked but after about 3 weeks I had no major cravings. Although sometimes it does smell tempting when I smell someone light up a fresh cigarette.

Quite a few major cities ban smoking within a certain distance from building entrances. Some states have banned smoking on public beaches. I’m sure I could find more examples but I can’t be arsed right now.

An interesting fact that I learned by going to the Carolina Raptor Center:
Cigarette butts are a major contributing factor to hawk and owl roadkill in urban and suburban areas. Because they’re mostly cotton or synthetic fiber, they make a good nesting material for rodents. These rodents are prey animals for the raptors, and can be easy targets when they’re on the roadside. When a hawk or owl is diving in for a kill, it doesn’t usually have great awareness of its periphery. If a car is coming down the road at that moment, the bird will often dive right into its path.

The amount of times I’ve seen cigarette buts, often still burning, dropped or tossed from the windows of cars, is enough to make me drop this a star.

Not that many people smoke in Norway anymore anyways, they’ve either quit or changed to snus . That is as disgusting when they throw it outside a trash can, but at least it doesn’t smell as bad. I’ve recently moved to Germany and I was surprised by the amount of smokers here. It’s not as bad as France though.

I recently quit again, but I always put my butts in my trash can after putting them out because I hate that shit. I got new neighbors and they chain smoke on their porch and then just flick the butts into both my yard and theirs. The people on the other side of me apparently don’t understand what garbage bags or cans are for and just put their trash directly on the boulevard sometimes days before collection. Then it blows all over my front yard. I used to just pick it up, but I’ve started picking it up and throwing it on their porch because fuck them and there lazy fat asses.I’m thinking about doing the same thing with my other neighbors butts too cause I’m an asshole like that.

I’m not sure which is worse: the pile of cigarette butts in the parking lot of the dirty diaper left behind. Imagine what this fossil layer is going to look like in a million years. Right above the level of can tabs will be the level of cigarette butts. At least my cigar butts are biodegradable (though I have now quit).

In some states they ban smoking in and within a certain distance of the entrance to public buildings. Here in Louisiana, state law says you have to be at least 25 feet away from the entrance of public buildings and 200 feet away from schools. Whether or not this enforced depends on the location and purpose of the building. Downtown courthouse? Strictly enforced. Local DMV office, maybe not.

I experienced this! Well, it wasn’t for a raptor chasing a rat. It was a dark night and I was one my way home after the evening shift which ended at midnight. I was almost home, so I was way out in the country. My car flushed a rabbit out of the ditch and an owl took the opportunity to catch a meal. I didn’t know it was happening until t he windshield became a wall of feathers. Fortunately, I was going slow (watching the rabbit) and was able to get on the brakes hard enough to avoid hitting the owl. The a drenalin rush kept me awake for a couple of hours!

I was a casual smoker for a short period of time. Woke up one day and decided, I’m gonna start smoking! Hazzah!
I always felt extreme shame when I would smoke in my car and flick the butt out the window. Most of the time, I tried to stash the butts in an empty water bottle to dispose of properly. Ashing and stashing the butts in the car was always a desperate last resort.
Anyway. I agree. It’s gross. I don’t do it anymore. Sorry.

We call it dip over here. Most people dipping spit into a can or a cup and yes, that stuff is Nasty. I worked in a university computer lab as a grad student. One morning I had to throw away a keyboard because someone had spilled their spit cup into it. Why they didn’t take care of it themselves is beyond me.

I’m still struggling with how we — as a society — tolerated smoking for so long. When I was in high school in the mid-90s, we could still walk around the mall while smoking. You couldn’t go into stores or toss your butts on the floor, but still.
Then a competing mall opened and only allowed smoking in the food court. We thought they were being Nazis.
In southern Europe around the same time, it was 10x worse. I remember spending the summer in Spain and Italy and they made us college kids look like lightweights. Smokes for grandma, smokes for the baby...sure, why not?! It was what my parents had described the 1950s were like (with respect to tobacco).

You’d love my across the hall neighbors. I left at the same time as one of them the other day and the smell coming from their open door made my sinuses burn. And its not just regular cigarettes either (if you know what I mean). And they leave their butts all over the halls.

My cousin was a heavy smoker . He used to freak us out by holding his breath and building up pressure in his lungs, then exhaling the smoke that was released. He could do this even when he hadn’t had a cigarette for a couple of hours.

After my grandfather died of Leukemia, my grandmother finally listen ed to the doctors and quit smoking. A few years later, she was explaining how she hated to go over to a friend’s house since it always reeked of smoke. Yeah, grandma, that’s why we didn’t like to go over to your house.

One of the few things I LOVED about being a resident adviser in college was busting people smoking in their rooms. Hello! Don’t you know that everyone can smell that? Haven’t you figured out that cigarettes and weed don’t smell the same? Aren’t you glad it was me and not the guy with the badge that showed up at your door?

One day someone in a door less Wrangler ashed on my car, so I retaliated. The FiST has a nasty habit of sending most of it’s wiper fluid over and around the car. I passed the Wrangler, shortened the distance between us, and sprayed for a solid 15 seconds. Hopped in the left lane, slowed down and stared. They were soaked.

“Nothing makes a kid want to spend less time with grandparents than a stinky smoke-filled house.”
That was my house. My parents were both heavy smokers. My dad still is, my mom is dead from it.
My dad used to spend all day chain smoking in his office in the basement ... which is where my toys were. I’d come home from school, and go down in the basement to play in what I can only describe as a fog of cigarette smoke. Picture the smokiest bar you have ever been in, and double it. Most of my Lego are nicotine stained.
When I turned 18, my dad said, “Now you’re old enough to go get our smokes for the week.” I told him in no uncertain terms that I would never buy their cigarettes, They bought three cartons a week, BTW. That’s how much they smoked.

After grandpa died and grandma quit, she did the math and realized she could have bought a new house if she had saved the money instead of smoking it. She made her living as an accountant. It’s a wonder she had never run the numbers before.

Dang. My grandparents lived an hour away, but I can’t count the number of Saturdays we spent over there, especially when my mom was keeping the books for my grandfather’s business. I loved my grandparents, but hated their house. The only saving grace was that they had cable and we didn’t. Even that wasn’t enough to keep me in the house for long.

I was so used to it, that I didn’t even care about the smell. I can’t stand the smell of smoke anymore though.
I never even considered taking a puff of anything though. I was so sick of that BS, that by the time I was old enough to try smoking, I didn’t want anything to do with it.

I tried a few times. I don’t handle stress or social interaction on a protracted basis particularly well, and smoking has become my adaptive coping mechanism.
It is not healthy, but i hate myself for doing it, so it works out.

Especially since ashtrays are a thing.
If you are such a dick that you absolutely have to give in to your compulsion to litter, at the very least switch to nonfilters so they biodegrade the first time it rains.
